GenF – based in Elancourt, outside Paris, France – is a spin out from Thales, dedicated to implementing the TARANIS project. TARANIS aims to demonstrate the feasibility of designing an initial inertial confinement fusion reactor.
GenF leverage expertise from Thales and from scientific laboratories CEA, CNRS LULI, CELIA, École polytechnique, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region. Assystem is to provide systems engineering expertise until December 2027, and Dassault Systèmes is providing its 3DExperience platform for digital modeling.
The TARANIS project was selected as a France 2030 programme laureate in February 2024, securing €12.5m from BPI France for the first phase of R&D. Thales subsequently spun out GenF in January 2025 as a dedicated entity to advance the TARANIS project, with Thales committing a further €6m.
