General Atomics – founded in 1955 and based in San Diego, California – has been involved in magnetic fusion research since the 1950s and operates the DIII-D National Fusion Facility for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. According to the company’s website, DIII-D is the largest magnetic fusion research facility in the United States and serves as a national user facility where scientists from around the world conduct experiments to advance understanding of fusion plasmas. General Atomics complements this work with extensive theory and computational modelling, as well as the development of advanced diagnostic systems that support plasma measurement across both magnetic and inertial fusion programs. The company is also a major contributor to the international ITER project, providing critical components and diagnostic systems.
