OpenStar Technologies – founded in 2021 and based in Wellington, New Zealand – is focused on developing a levitated dipole fusion machine in which a superconducting core magnet is intended to float within a vacuum vessel and confine plasma around it. Its technical strategy combines high-temperature-superconducting (HTS) magnet technology with the plasma-physics hypothesis that a levitated dipole can support an inward turbulent pinch and centrally peaked pressure profiles.

OpenStar’s public objective is to progress through successive experimental machines toward electricity-producing systems in the 2030s. The company also presents neutron-source applications as a possible earlier route to market.
