TAE Technologies, founded in 1998 and based in Irvine, California, is developing commercial fusion power using an advanced form of the field-reversed configuration (FRC). The company’s technology employs neutral particle beams to form, heat and sustain the FRC plasma, with the long-term aim of using aneutronic fuel such as hydrogen-boron (pB11) to minimise neutron production and radioactive waste.
TAE Technologies has built multiple generations of fusion devices as part of its long-running development of field-reversed configuration (FRC) plasmas. Its most recent prototype, ‘Norm’, has successfully demonstrated neutral-beam-only FRC formation, validating key operating modes and subsystems while substantially simplifying plasma formation relative to earlier designs. Based on Norm’s performance, TAE announced in November 2025 that it would shorten its development roadmap by eliminating the previously planned Copernicus device and proceed directly to the development of ‘Da Vinci’, a prototype commercial fusion power plant targeted for the early 2030s.
Subsequently, in December 2025, TAE announced a definitive agreement to merge with Trump Media & Technology Group (Nasdaq: DJT) in an all-stock transaction valued at more than $6bn, a move intended to take TAE public and provide capital to support the transition from advanced research devices to commercial-scale fusion power development, subject to regulatory and shareholder approval.
