Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) – founded in 2018 and based in Devens, Mass. – is a spinout from MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center. It is focused on developing compact, high-field fusion devices using advanced high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnets.
CFS is currently constructing SPARC, a tokamak designed to demonstrate net-energy fusion. SPARC is planned to achieve first plasma in 2026. The company then plans to transition to ARC, a fusion power plant design that builds on SPARC’s results. Both SPARC and ARC rely on HTS magnets to generate stronger magnetic fields within a compact geometry, allowing for reduced device size compared with traditional superconducting tokamaks.
