Focused Energy – founded in 2021 and based in Darmstadt, Germany, and Redwood City, California – is a spin-out from the Technical University of Darmstadt developing a laser-driven fusion approach centred on fast ignition. The company is advancing high-energy, high-repetition-rate laser systems and integrated target designs intended to enable efficient ignition with reduced driver energy requirements.

Focused Energy maintains key collaborations with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, drawing on expertise from the National Ignition Facility’s fast-ignition and short-pulse laser programmes. The company also partners with RWE, which supports planning for future power-plant integration and energy-market deployment.

Focused Energy aims to demonstrate a fast-ignition fusion power plant prototype capable of delivering commercial-scale energy output by 2037.
