General Fusion – founded in 2002 and based in Richmond, Canada – is developing Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) technology.  The company’s approach involves using a spherical chamber and a series of piston actuators to compress a liquid metal cavity, achieving conditions for fusion without need of superconducting magnets or high-powered lasers.

The concept traces back to the 1970s at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, but failed then due to insufficient precision in controlling the pistons. General Fusion believes modern computing now makes the necessary coordination possible.

The company aims to achieve scientific breakeven equivalent (that is, achieving with D-D, the temperature, density, and confinement time that would have given a Q=1 outcome had it been fuelled with more reactive D-T) in 2026, with the ultimate objective of providing carbon-free fusion energy to the grid in the 2030s.
